校長コラム：260501｜仙台の春と、新しい出会いのなかで Principal's Column: May 2026 — In the Midst of Sendai's Spring and New Beginnings
5月の仙台は、新緑が眩しい季節です。青葉山の木々は鮮やかな緑に染まり、定禅寺通りのケヤキ並木が柔らかな光をこぼす——そんな美しい季節に、今年もまた新しい仲間を迎えることができました。
今年度の入学生は、日本各地からはもちろん、ベトナム、ネパール、中国、パキスタン、スリランカ、バングラデシュと、実に多様な背景を持つ学生たちです。言葉も文化も違う学生たちが同じ教室に集まり、同じ目標に向かって学んでいる——この光景を毎年目にするたびに、私はこの仕事の醍醐味を感じます。
専門学校での学びは、大学とは違います。知識を積み上げることも大切ですが、それ以上に「人と向き合う力」「場を読む力」「心を動かす言葉を選ぶ力」——そういった生きた技術を磨く場です。私たちYMCAが目指す教育は、資格取得や就職に留まらず、社会に出てからも自分を更新し続けられる人間を育てることにあります。
5月は「青葉まつり」の季節です。すずめ踊りの賑わい、甲冑姿の武者行列、そして市民が一体となって盛り上がるこのまつりは、仙台が誇る文化の一つ。ホテル・観光を学ぶ学生にとっては、地域文化を肌で感じる絶好の機会でもあります。授業で学んだ「観光地の魅力の伝え方」を、実際の街の中で試してみてください。
「仙台に来てよかった」——卒業生の口からこの言葉を聞くたびに、私たちの教育の意味を確認できます。
"I'm so glad I came to Sendai." Every time we hear these words from a graduate, we are reminded of the true meaning of what we do.
新入生のみなさん、ここでの一日一日を大切にしてください。在校生のみなさん、新しい仲間を温かく迎えてあげてください。そして留学生のみなさん——遠い国から来てくれたことを、心から歓迎します。
May in Sendai is a season of brilliant fresh greenery. The trees on Aobayama glow vivid green, and the zelkova trees lining Jozenji Street filter soft light onto the street below — it is in this beautiful season that we have once again welcomed new students to our school.
This year's incoming class includes students from across Japan, as well as from Vietnam, Nepal, China, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Seeing students with such different languages and cultural backgrounds gathered in the same classroom, working toward the same goals, reminds me every year of why I love this work.
Learning at a vocational college is different from university. While building knowledge matters, what we truly develop here is the ability to engage with others, read a situation, and choose words that move people. The education we at YMCA strive to provide goes beyond certifications and employment — it is about nurturing people who can continue to grow and reinvent themselves long after they enter the workforce.
May is the season of the Aoba Matsuri festival — the lively sparrow dance, the processions of samurai in full armor, and the city coming together in celebration. For students studying hospitality and tourism, this is a wonderful opportunity to experience regional culture firsthand. Try applying what you have learned in class about "how to convey the appeal of a destination" to the city around you.
To our new students: treasure every day here. To returning students: please welcome your new classmates warmly. And to our international students — we welcome you wholeheartedly, from whatever corner of the world you have come.
